Planning Ahead for Compliance: An Analytics Road-map for Sales & Marketing The best plan for harnessing analytics powerful predictive and explanatory capabilities in sales & marketing is a three-pronged approach:

Have a strategy. Before anything can be executed you need to have underlying goals, and identify the scope of the task. First, how does your compliance duty fit in with the companys over-all plan? What data is required? What systems is it in? With which other functional units will you need to coordinate? What is the basic approach for executing an analytics solution: in-house or out-source? What tools would we need? Who can help? Thinking through these issues first before burning many person-hours, or spending large sums on consultants or software improves your chances of executing a real success. Define the financial outputs of the group, to include things such as: forecasts, sales plans, market opportunities, campaign forecasts and budgets, marketing program budgets, etc. and then tie analytic processes to the production of each of these outputs. Analytics is so important to the production of these financial outputs because it provides a traceable process linking disparate data and for rendering heretofore assumed or grossly estimated data in more scientific and transparent ways. Analytic techniques that could be used in producing these outputs more scientifically could include:

1. Output vs. performance measurements 2. Financial to non-financial comparisons 3. Regression analysis 4. Predictive modeling 5. Trend analysis 6. Types of analyses: inter-period analysis, industry comparisons, budget comparisons, economic analysis 7. Measurement techniques: ratios, percentages, physical quantities, monetary amounts

Tie planning, budgeting, and other financial analyses to the COSO risk management model and identify priorities for implementing an analytic solution. The Information and Communication element of the framework reads like a requirements statement for an analytics solution. The pre-curser requirements of successful analytic solutions (data warehousing, ETL tools, data hygiene, etc.) facilitate information and communication. Also, analytics is how to assess current data for a real-time view of risks inherent in a process, function or unit. Finally, the ability to leverage historical data and identify trends, correlate results, forecast performance, and provide early warning signals concerning potential risk-related events is possible only through analytic processes. Conclusion Since the effective date of 404 is not until June 15, 2004, there is still time to prepare a compliance infrastructure that includes powerful analytic capabilities. Its not all about compliance, however. Firming up sales & marketing forecasts with sophisticated analytics is smart business. Through analytics you will learn an enormous about your customers and markets and competitors and you will be able to optimize your efforts. Developing an analytics-based compliance infrastructure is no simple or small task. For the many companies operating under diverse data silos, management fiefdoms and incomplete communication loops, the preparation tasks are daunting. Intel believes that the Sarbanes-Oxley compliance costs estimated by the SEC (an extra five resource-hours per month) are off by an order of a by at least a factor of 100, if not a greater order of magnitude . We have all seen statistics banded areound that are associated with the high rate of project failure. According to a study by Gartner, nearly 40% percent of IT projects fail or are abandoned before completion. There are many larger figures flying around on the same subject. But regardless of the figure - it is very high and a dark cloud over the project management industry.

Too many project managers are afraid of being labelled as quitters or failures. It certainly takes more courage for a Project Manager to admit that a project is a failure than to accept it (with no choice) when they finally walk over the edge of the cliff.

To be frank, continuing with a hopeless project is like flogging a dead horse and wasting large sums of money in the process. It does not make very smart business sense.

According to a four-year survey of 672 senior IT and business managers conducted by the Center for Project Management in the USA, approximately only 20 percent of Project Managers have a process for identifying and cancelling failed projects. Do you have one?

It is natural for most project managers and project teams to have a task-oriented focus. Most project methodologies will anticipate project difficulties and suggest monitoring and controlling processes for the management of change, issues and problems.

But the resulting mindset for the project effort can often be solely focused on getting the project back on track, with complete disregard for any real consideration given to the fact that the project may very well be a dead horse. No one has the courage to get the executive in question to face up to the fact that their project was not the best idea after all.

The movie symbolises the war between good and evil, massacre and fortitude. Various characters are used to present a wonderful action movie. Amongst them, bigger role is played by Autobots whereas Decepticons are playing the wicked part. To project the uprightness of soul, in fact strong characters like Ironhide are created.

Like rest of the Autobots, Ironhide is made to look unbeatably strong. Apart from the other fellow Autobots, it is evident from his conduct that he is arrogant. His anger projecting nature makes him stubborn against the evil forces, and he fights the Decepticons with complete determination.

The persona of Ironhide is made with maximum distinction, his height, his body mass, and his voice; all praise the character of his authoritative physical and moral character. He is an important part of NEST: Network Elements: Supporters and Transformers. These Supporters are humans which have collaborated with the Autobots to help them in their job of saving the world and humanity. It is an international alliance combining the two on one platform.

Ironhide is an interesting character, his dialogues and expressive nature makes him all the more adorable to the viewers. In the movie Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, John Turturro has articulated his tough voice. Ironhide is embodied in silver steel colour that adds up to his sophisticated and stiff looks.

He is swift and talented in his moves and fights with the challenger with exactitude. Timing is his most outstanding constituent; he makes the right decision on the right time: when to attack an enemy and eradicate the evil. He is able to transform himself in to a GMC Topkick.

The action macho is not as outsized as his contemporaries are, though he projects efficiency in both the parts of the motion picture; Transformers 2007, and Transformers 2. He has been introduced in the second part: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, as the weapons skilled of the Autobots. Keeping this task in examination, it can be said that he has been precisely named, or vice-versa, he has been given the right assignment.

One wonderful attribute of the character Ironhide is that he becomes annoyed on certain things just like the teenagers. This conduct gives him a touch of being youthful and gives a hint towards his age (which is quite an elated thought about a robot). Along with all the other Autobots and Decepticons (mechanical characters), Ironhide has been developed. We can see all of them being customised with new versions of cars/ trucks, fighter planes, guns, and fighting tools. The high definition and apparatus based motion picture thrills us all with its action sequences which are truly original. Scene depictions have been done so competently that it is tough to think that all that is a made up edition for the screen. All of it looks so incontrovertible, and for that reason people are attracted towards the motion picture.

Googling for Adult Diapers!

I have been frustrated by this experience since I purposely try to avoid the murky places the internet is more than willing to take me. My rationale was that this show had been broadcast on regular television so how perverse could it be? Despite the obvious holes in my logic, I was neither horrified nor titillated by the outcome. The video portrayed an attractive young woman admitting to secretly enjoying wearing babyish clothes and diapers. She had done so since the age of six when she started sneaking nappies from relatives' diaper bags or spending her allowance on them at the drugstore. She explained that this wasn't in any way a sexual thing for her; it was a way to shed stress and be comforted. She claimed also to not have suffered any childhood trauma that made her seek out this pastime. Next her boyfriend was asked how he felt about it when he first learned of this quirk. He answered he was OK with it because "I know everybody's strange." Fair enough.

So then what was to be a brief you-tube foray took on a research life of its own. In the process, I learned a lot and dispelled some preconceived notions. Infantilism is the clinical term for the fascinations or fetishes of the adult baby or diaper lover. It does not appear to be a mental disorder according to a large body of opinion neither, in most cases, is its behavior claimed to be tied to sexual gratification. Sexual activity is very often kept separate from the fetish. The majority of AB/DL discussion and social groups make a point of rejecting pedophiles.

It seems that most of these folks use the paraphernalia of baby life to regain glimpses of their childhood happiness and to recall the comfort and lack of stress they had as children. I learned that there are even special nurseries in the U.S. where adults can engage in baby play and then drift off to sleep in over-sized cribs. Most of these gentle folk do not soil their diapers, according to what I have learned, although there is a small percentage who do enjoy having their dirty diaper changed by a well-paid consort.

I do not identify with this fascination, but I definitely understand the desire to shed stress, and to return to a child-like state of care-free bliss. I suppose there's nothing strange about this desire; some of us seek relief in a bottle, or worse, and this is quite innocuous really. Still, our escapes from reality can end up complicating grownup life even further, I think. At one point near the end of this little research project I saw a photo posted on a website of a grown man wearing diapers and sucking on a pacifier. That's when I decided that I knew enough about this fetish and I could quit looking any further. Now I'm back to just looking for the best online deals I can find.

More than any other function it relies on guesswork for its most critical financial instruments. Sales forecasts generate guesses about what a given market demand should be. Sales plans generate guesses about how the company should capture that demand. Opportunity assessments generate guesses about a company or products addressable market. Critically, many other business functions depend on sales and marketings guesses:

" Finance projects cost and profit levels and capital needs based on a given sales forecast, and usually publishes its expectations to Wall Street.

" For a manufacturer, operations plans what to produce, and thus what raw materials to procure based on a given sales plan or forecast. Service organizations allocate human capital and adjust fulfillment plans. A real-world example demonstrates the potential impact of getting it wrong: a major airline over-forecast nearly 60,000 seats crossing the Atlantic four summers ago, and had to swallow enormous costs from the capacity it built to accommodate these phantom flyers. It had already paid access fees to airports, allocated planes, entered longer term fuel contracts, etc. When summer came, planes with as few as 15 passengers would make the crossing. The ticket charges couldnt even pay for the direct costs of making the flight!

Unfortunately, sales projections are often based on the plan of what executives want to sell, not on an analytic assessment of the actual market demand at the time of the forecast. The Next most common method is to premise the forecast on some loose version of historical analysis: this is what we sold last year; this year, well beat it by 2%. Will Sarbanes-Oxley digest such back-of-the-envelope or simplistic analyses? Do you want to take the risk to find out? Taking a chance is probably not a good idea. In practical terms, compliance will require transparent, accurate and effective processes for generating forecasts.

In fact, any financial report that will eventually be used or relied upon by the CFO or any other part of the business should be drafted with awareness that someday, along with hundreds of thousands of other documents, it may end up as part of a response to a subpoena. Ordinarily, future statements are not actionable, (weve all seen the disclaimer at the bottom of nearly every press release) but that is not the point. Its not that the reports and forecasts of sales & marketing contain prognostication; its about whether those reports and forecasts were developed through sound analytic and business practices " i.e. under an umbrella of internal control. While the prognostications themselves may be beyond legal recourse, the processes behind them probably are not. (Continued in Part 5)
