The Shoe That Thinks

I suffer from heel spurs. These are calcium deposits on the bones that make running painful. I created them years ago, when I was an obese jogger. All that pounding on the pavement with all that weight caused the bones to make heel spurs.

Mine are large and painful. I went to the doctor and she said they were the biggest she had ever seen. I had to stop jogging. I had to wear shoe inserts. It was no fun.

Because I have the core belief that anything can be healed, I kept searching for a cure. One day I saw an ad for a new running shoe that seemed promising.

The shoe has a computer chip in it that analyzes where you are running and adjusts the shoe's heel to give you the best cushion. I know this sounds sci-fi but I was desperate. Plus I love cool gadgets. So I ordered a pair.

They arrived in a large box, protected by foam inserts. There were batteries and an instruction manual. I felt like I had ordered an odd new laptop.

But the shoes.

Ah, the shoes.

They looked like they were designed for Flash, the famous DC Comics character who could zip around the world in seconds.

I put the shoes on, turned them on, and grabbed the dog. We went for a run. I was amazed at how easy and smooth it was to jog again. I was running faster than the dog. I felt like I could run forever.

I felt like The Flash.

But the real deciding factor would be the next day. If there was going to be any pain, I'd feel it in the morning. In the past, if I did too much on my feet, I'd wake up with an aching heel. And I'd limp all day.

Well, the next morning came and there wasn't any pain at all. None.

In fact, I just moments ago went for yet another run in my new shoes. I got the idea to write this article for you while jogging down the road.

Entrepreneur Success: A look at the ego, and how to let go!

Speaking from experience, in order for me to achieve success I had to let go of my ego. I had this belief, that in order for me to become successful, I firstly had to do everything on my own accord, to be a one-man-band. Secondly, that the ideas all had to come from me, that they should be original so I could "claim" them. And finally, the biggest hurdle for me, was to learn to admit that sometimes I didn't know best (ouch that hurt!).

What were the thoughts going through my mind? That if I was wrong, it meant I couldn't be successful. I mean - how far from the truth is that! You look at all successful entrepreneurs - each have made many mistakes along their journey, and that is what makes them who they are today. Thomas Edison made over 1000 mistakes before he came across the right way to create a light bulb, and look how successful he was!

So, I wanted to give permission to all you budding entrepreneurs to let go of the ego - because as soon as you do, success soon follows and it is the most freeing thing you can do. Here are 3 things to think about:

1. "One Man Band Syndrome" - I used to think that I would only be deemed successful if I did it all on my own. That way, I thought, I could claim all the credit. I used to think I should do the accounts, the marketing, advertising and the core work. How ridiculous is that?! You become spread so thinly that nothing really gets done. You also end up doing things that you don't enjoy or aren't even good at.

LESSON ONE: Learn to delegate and do the 1-2 things you enjoy doing the most. Richard Branson, a successful entrepreneur, stuck to what he was good at and got others to do everything else.

2. It has to be MY original idea for me to be successful - I used to get quite defensive if someone suggested an idea that improved on mine. That, my friends, is the ego rearing its ugly head. As soon as I embraced anyone's suggestions on improving my idea, I realised just how good an idea could develop. If I hadn't taken in the ideas or suggestions that people suggested when developing my business proposals, I wouldn't have got anywhere. Many successful people will admit they only replicated the ideas of other successful entrepreneurs.

LESSON TWO: Open up, allow for other ideas to be suggested. Use the information to better your idea, or business system.

3. Right first off, otherwise therefore I am a failure - Something to be very aware of is giving up after your first attempt doesn't work. This mindset is the mindset of someone who will actually never make it - yes, they may try something new over and over, but what they don't do is commit, persist and determine to be successful. That is what is key - and after all be open to what your failures bring. A lot of successful inventions began as a completely different intention. If you look up the Slinky or Popsicle or even Silly Putty, they all were "failures" for another idea, but became successes in their own right.

LESSON THREE: Commitment to a goal of success is key - allow your idea to evolve through failures and obstacles. The journey is the key, as long as you are persistent and allow your idea to change, sometimes many times, on its way to success.

Don't worry about how you are going to get there, just be determined to reach your goal of success, whatever that means to you. I was able to let go of the way I was going to get to my destination, and it was amazing what opportunities turned up. When you let go of the resistance of the ego, there will be a flood of ideas, suggestions and money making vehicles that will take you to where you want to go. Just know where it is you want to head, research your 'vehicles' that will take you there and enjoy the scenery on the way!

He wants me to promote him and his method. He went on to say he'd be happy to meet with me to prove his skills.

What did he have in mind?

He wants to beat me up.

I'm serious.

"If I can defeat you within 3 minutes," he said in his letter, "then you promise to promote me and my products. Deal?"

He went on to give me the contact information for his agent so I could set up the match.

It might have made an interesting webcast. I can just see the headline:

"51-year-old formerly obese Internet Marketing Expert meets 30-year-old Superman-fit Martial Arts Expert in Quick-Kill Match. Register now."

Gee, I wonder who would win?

I'd lose even if I went armed.

What would you have done?

How would you have responded to his offer?

Unless you're a fighter looking for a match, you'd probably toss this offer in the trash.

I often wonder what people are thinking. Does this guy really think I'll fight him? And then, if I lose, I'll gladly smile and start marketing him?

I don't claim to be a fighter and am not seeking bouts. I'm also not seeking new clients. Especially clients who want to break my nose to prove they are better than me.

When you reach out to anyone, keep in mind that no one likes to be told they are inferior. It is not a good way to win friends and influence people. In fact, it's not a good way to do much of anything.

I think the lesson here is that we all have egos. The better way to approach people is to put your ego under theirs.

In other words, be willing to lower your status. Don't flaunt your stuff. Instead, show your weakness and ask for help.

This nervy fighter might have done better by offering to teach me his new method, not offering to embarrass me with it.

Contrast his behavior to that of a man in Florence, Italy. This gent heard I loved leather jackets. He went and bought two of them and sent them to me, gratis.

I'll never forget *him*.

This works in your marketing, too.

Rather than boast that you or your business is the greatest, focus on how you or your business can make your customer or client the greatest.

Or surprise your customers by giving them gifts (much like this article is a gift). People love to be surprised on the positive side.

However, there may be times when you will find it inconvenient. This is particularly likely when using the drag-and-drop facility within Microsoft Word.

This feature allows you to highlight text and simply drag it to a new location. However, just as you are about to drag, it's very easy for the cursor to collide with the Mini toolbar and instead of dragging your text, you simply change its format.

Each Word user can decide for himself or herself whether they like the Mini toolbar facility. If you decide it is more of a hindrance than a help, Word allows you to deactivate the Mini toolbar facility. From the Office button, select Word Options. In the Popular category, the very first option is labelled "Show Mini Toolbar on selection". If you have had enough of the Mini toolbar, simply uncheck this option. Now, whenever you highlight text, that pesky Mini toolbar will not appear.

The way I see it, there are only three possible outcomes. Things could stay the same for us and we would see little change, we could be adversely affected or we could even prosper. If you are like me, then this latter scenario is what we would like to see happen to us. The question is, how can we make that happen?

If we look back in time, we will see that the economy is constantly fluctuating. Right now we find ourselves in a recession, but it wasn't too long ago that we were riding high and there was immense economic growth. We have also experienced periods of time where the economy was fairly stable.

We do not have to be frightened by this economic recession. There is so much hype in the media that sometimes it puts people in panic mode. It would be a good idea to get a little education on the causes of recessions and how to cope with them. I highly recommend a book by William Bonner entitled "Financial Reckoning Day: Surviving the Soft Depression of the 21st Century". Perhaps you can find a copy at your local library. Most libraries will order a book if it is not yet part of their inventory.

There are a few common sense things that we can all do. Certainly we would want to minimize our spending and even though it might be difficult, we should attempt to save money for the possibility of even tighter times ahead. Now is not the time to buy anything other than necessities, such as food and gas. We still need to eat and to drive our vehicles to work.

In the same vein, we would not want to take on any new debt during a recession, even if we think we can afford it. In these unpredicatable times, we cannot foresee if we will still be able to afford that shiny new car sitting out there in our driveway.

Do a little brainstorming and think of ways to earn extra income. Do you have a few rooms in your basement that you could fix up and rent out? There is a huge demand for inexpensive accommodation right now with so many people losing their homes.

First of all, lets define what a mentor is. Webster's dictionary says it means 'wise and trusted adviser'. I think we can agree that we could all do with helpful advise now and again. However, a mentor is a lot more than just a person we talk to occasionally who gives us some wise counsel.

In most cases the mentor is the older of the two people. This does not have to be the case though. There are many things that young people know that older people have no clue about. One thing that comes to mind is the technical aspect of learning to do business via the internet. So let's not make any rash assumptions.

For example, let's say you are middle aged and you have just decided to start a home-based internet marketing business. You are not internet savvy at all and none of your friends are either. So what do you do? The answer is to search for a person who can show you the ropes and in this case it would most likely be a younger person who is having success in this market.

Ask around and let people know exactly what type of person you are looking for and the skills that you need to learn. In your particular instance, let's say you are looking for a person who is very successful at marketing over the internet. Be specific about what it is you need to learn.

Take the time to think back on the people you have met in the past. Perhaps they might not be able to help you personally but what about their grown or teenage children. It's a sure bet that most teenagers know more about the internet than us older folks. Don't be afraid to ask - the worst thing that can happen is that they say no.
