Todays Brands Of Sewing Machines

What is the cost of a new sewing machine? You can get a machine for under a hundred dollars or you can pay up to $12,000.

You get what you pay for when it comes to sewing machines. There are junk machines, low end mechanicals, midline electronics, computerized, and luxury machines.

What are the major sewing machine brands?

Generic sewing machines are machines produced by a third party, but sold under the brand label. Among the better known generic brands are Bernette, Dressmaker, Kenmore, Necchi, Simplicity, Wards, and White. Some of these have already faded away, while others continue to generate good sales.

Baby Lock Sewing Machines are owned by Tacony Corporation in Fenton, Missouri. This brand originated with the introduction of the home serger in 1964. The brand has grown and expanded since then offering top quality sewing machines and sergers. Its sergers offer features available nowhere else. Like most modern sewing machine companies, it draws from several manufacturers for various parts of its line. It maintains a quality control and design team from the United States to implement its designs and enhancements through its world wide marketing and production.

Brother International is a Japanese manufacturer that produces hundreds of different products from fax machines, to consumer electronics, and of course sewing machines. They actually market two distinct lines of sewing machines. On the low end, they sell the Brother sewing machine through large box stores like Walmart. Prices will range from under a hundred dollars up to about four hundred dollars. Then the market a quality line of sewing machines under the Pacesetter By Brother brand name. This line includes some of the best midrange and high end sewing machines. Prices begin about $400 and extend up to about $9,000 for combination computerized sewing and embroidery. Brother also produces many generic machines for other companies like Sears.

Bernina is considered the Cadillac of the sewing machine industry. The company is fourth generation family owned and operated from Switzerland. Its quality is well known and the brand enjoys one of the highest brand loyalties. It is considered a luxury line of sewing machines. Bernina introduced the hem stitching machine, home zig zag machine, computerized sewing, and the only Microsoft Windows operating system on a sewing machine. Its newest offering is an amazing computerized combination sewing and embroidery machine with over 1,000 stitches, a twelve inch sewing arm, and a $12,000 price tag.

Elna was also made in Switzerland for many years. Recently, it was purchased by Janome of Japan, and being developed as its own distinctly feminine brand line.

Out of Sweden comes the Husqavarna brand also known as Viking. It is well known for its rugged endurance yet easy use. Husqavarna ,Singer, and Pfaff are currently owned by the same conglomerate and manufactured in China.

Janome is the largest manufacturer of sewing machines in the world with over 50,000,000 machines produced. For a time, it marketed its machines under the New Home brand in the United States, but all of Janomes brand specific models are now sold under the Janome brand. Janome is also well known for its generic machines produced for other companies and sold under their brands like Kenmore and Wards. Janome is well known for their Memory Craft series which incorporates advanced robotic technologies into their computerized sewing and embroidery machine line.

The Pfaff brand is traced back to 1862 and Georg Michael Pfaff of Germany. This premium line of sewing machines gained a strong reputation of German engineering. The brand still maintains the flavor of the tradition, while it is manufactured in China with the Singer and Husqavarna lines.

The most popular brand of sewing machines is Singer. Since 1851, the Singer brand has been almost synonymous with sewing machines. During the early years the I.M. Singer & Company overwhelmed the market, while hundreds of other companies came and went. Even today it continues to be a popular brand manufactured in China.
