Attending the Ohio State Fair Fine Arts Exhibit

By Rick Amorey

Those who plan to visit the Ohio State Fair would want to take a break from the same old carnival rides for a special treat; the Fine Arts Exhibition. There are around 300 pieces in virtually every medium, so the exhibit that will be held in the Cox Fine Arts Center will have something for everyone.

The impressiveness starts from the roster of jurors. Works in the professional division have been chosen by esteemed artists Michael Ferris Jr. and Tim Portlock, from New York and Philadelphia, respectively. The amateur division has been chosen by ceramist, author, and editor Anderson Turner from Kent State University.

The three judges try to include pieces with a clear vision. The result of their selection is a pleasant mix of the straightforward traditional with the more modern and conceptual. You will see that photography and painting are the main focus of this year, but there will be sculptures and other sorts of crafts around, too. There are bound to be surprises at every corner, as a result.

To me, one of the best on exhibit has to be the Josh Foy trio of ceramic sculptures. See if you picture this: three large cylindrical columns that resemble scientific core samples that could be best described as fossilized pieces of human culture and civilization. You'll see machine parts, trash, and stray bricks that are made to be rock layers in the cylinder. It's something that an advanced civilization would unearth when they peruse our race.

A truly remarkable place for breathtaking crafts, the Ohio State Fair surely cannot be missed. Watch out for it sometime in autumn; maybe you'll have a chance to join in on the amateur division if you think you have what it takes.
