Old Palm Harbor Main Street Art and Craft Show

By Sive Iver

The earliest written record of either community of Ozona and Old Palm Harbor was in 1878 when a post office commission under the name of Bay St. Joseph was granted. But Bay St. Joseph was short lived; the community was then changed to Yellow Buff. Buy after a few years this name was again changed because of the negative connotation it gave when the yellow fever came out. It was then changed again to Ozona meaning pure air.

Sutherland was the original name for Palm Harbor the change of name happen in 1888 when a post office was granted. It was also the same year when the railroad cam through. Sutherland boasted two beautiful hotels, the larger one becoming Southern College in 1902. It sat high on the bluff overlooking Sutherland Bayou and the Gulf of Mexico. Sutherland was thought to be named after Duke of Sutherland, who visited these parts after landing at Tarpon Springs in 1887. Local pioneers dismiss this coincidence, pointing out that the name Sutherland is a shortening of Southern Land and Development Company, the group which originally platted the community in 1888.

In 1925, the downtown area, whose main street is Florida Avenue, was renamed Palm Harbor. This district is the heart of an unincorporated part of Pinellas County with nearly 100,000 residents. Florida Avenue flows down to the "Harbor" at Pop Stansell Park, our connection to the Gulf of Mexico. Since 1888, Palm Harbor has gone through three name changes and several "past lives" as a pioneer town, a farming center, a developer's dream, a resort town and a college town. Historic downtown Palm Harbor, once the heart of daily community activity is stepping up to this position again.

The historic district of Old Palm Harbor is known for its small town atmosphere and strong sense of community. The Old Palm Harbor Main Street, Inc. a non-profit organization, values our community heritage and those characteristics that make Old Palm Harbor a special place.
