Finding Client For Contractors

By Henrik S.

Contractors are becoming more and more popular as people learn that they can work independently without having to jump through hoops to make a living on their own. Independent contractors are people who venture out on their own to run their own business, doing something that they love. This allows them to earn as much or as little as they want, without having to punch a clock and report to someone else.

However, it can be difficult to be an independent contractor, because this also means you have to find your own clients. And of course, it is imperative that you find clients so that you can build your business and stay solvent. The type of clients you are looking for will depend on the industry you have chosen for your contracting work. For example, if you are a freelance writer, you might search for clients in industries that focus on writing like magazines, newspapers, and many places on the Internet.

There are many clients that post the work they need completed in various places besides the classified, for instance, if you are a building contractor you would want to get a membership to what is called a dodge report. This will let you see what projects are open for bidding, not only in your area, but also throughout the entire United States.

The report will tell you what the project's status is, who owns the project, the type of work that needs to be done on the project, and the general contractor. It will also contain information about other key contractors on the project. You may also be able to see other bids that have been placed so that you can come in lower and therefore increase your chances of winning the job.

Word of mouth is also a great way to bring in clients but this can be difficult if you are just starting out. You can offer a discount on your services for first time clients and advertize this special on something like flyers that are inexpensive to make. You should also consider adding in a discount for referrals so that when you have a happy client, they will pass your name on and get a special rate on your services for spreading the word.

Another great way to find work is to go to conventions or expo shows; set up a booth to display your products or services, and have a good selection of examples of your work with you so that prospective clients can see what you can do. If you do decide to do this as one way to get more clients, make sure you bring plenty of business cards, brochures, pictures of your work, etc., etc., so that you can hand out contact information and other information prospective clients are going to need there. This is a great way to get new clients with relatively little effort.

A lot of people dream of being their own bosses, which is what being an independent contractor can do for you. However, finding clients can be very daunting especially for new contractors. You cannot be afraid to "sell" yourself to clients and show them what you can do. By making yourself visible to the public and making yourself known to potential clients, you may just find that you will have your plate full in little to no time.

If you know where to look, there is a lot of work out there for independent contractors. Word of mouth can be a very good way to continue to get business once you are established, but do not rely on just word-of-mouth to draw in new business. Instead, use the Internet to your advantage, as this is a great way to get going with relatively little effort.
