Creative Folks Can Be Successful While Also Making Their Community Prosperous

By Leigh-Ann Lemire

Have you ever wanted to become a well-known artist, quit your nine to five job and only do art? Would you like your artworks known about and purchased by many?

It is not as difficult as you may imagine. You could be a successful artist and help your artist friends and make the area where you work flourish. You have to garner attention and keep putting your artwork on view, and make yourself and your art noticed. Keep reading for a straightforward, tried and true, very successful way in which to accomplish your goals.

The background data that you need to pull off this project is the fact that whenever artists go into an area and create, the area stops its dwindling spiral and goes uphill. For examples, many an area in Los Angeles has gone downhill, buildings vacated and boarded up but when artists go into the area, the buildings get bought, repaired and the commerce of the area flourishes. One such place is the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District. It started as a very bad area to be in, the area was in complete ruins and has only been in existence for ten years - it is now famous, beautiful, safe, well-known and it prospers.

With the recession going on, you may have noticed that there are empty buildings in your area. The buildings may be office buildings, car lots and shops in strip malls. The best use for the empty spaces is for creative endeavors, don't you agree? Can you imagine artists creating in every single empty building space?

The project that follows has been tried and found to work. It's practically free to start. This project will help you succeed in your artistic endeavors, create success for your fellow artists and help your local community flourish, too.

This is what to do:

1. Find local talented folks to help you with the project. Look for painters, poets, musicians, singers, performers, fine crafters, etc.

Place free ads at Craigslist.org, kijiji.com, local newspaper sites and do a google search for "free classified sites" to find more place to advertise. Be sure to put your zip code to keep it local to your area.

Make some fliers to distribute house to house in your neighborhood.

Put the flyers in the local businesses.

Ask people you know for any other artists they may know. You can knock on doors - go to your neighbors, even the ones you do not know well.

2. After you have figured out whom you will work with, you need to make a presentation pack. It's not a fancy pack.

A local office store will have the supplies you need - white glossy paper (about $10), clear plastic sheet covers (100 for about $11) and a presentation binder ($2-$5).

Make a separate page for each artist involved in the project which includes their contact info, pictures of the artist and his or her artwork, something written about the artist and any interesting notes. Put each page in your presentation pack.

3. Locate a vacant building nearby. This is where the group you now have will be able to create, and have someone on site presenting and selling your work.

It is possible to find someone interested in selling artwork by just asking friends, family or neighbors who need work. The sales person you choose will have to get a tax permit, which you get by contacting the state tax office by phone or on the internet. Usually they are free, but some states require a fee or bond. A local business license is also required in some cities or towns - you will have to check at city hall. Pay your sales person on commission and inspire him or her to sell more by offering bonuses when the sales go over a certain amount.

For the space you choose, find out who is the owner or the real estate agent for the property.

4. The next step is to call the owner or Realtor and set up a date and time to do a presentation. You could mention that you and a group of artists have an interest in getting the building leased.

5. Present your ideas to the agent or owner keeping the emphasis on the benefits for the owner, including these points:

The way to get the building leased fast is to get artists into the area to create there because each time that artists go into an area, the commerce picks up, buildings get leased or sold and the community flourishes. It has been proven to work time and again.

If you need to, mention the artists project in the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District where a group of artists raised the living standards and made a large area flourish.

Let the Realtor/owner see the presentation pack, to become familiar with the artists involved.

6. In case the owner requires insurance for you to use the space, partner with a local Alternative School or charity - both of these entities will have the insurance required.

7. Create and Set Out Signs.

"Artists at Work" or "Artists Ahead" on large signs with arrows will attract attention. Put some balloons on them to make them stand out more. You can make these signs in bright colors on plywood, poster board or on A-frames and put them on either side of the street about beginning at about 50 yards from the building and getting closer. Attach the signs to posts with bungee cords.

8. Create art.

In the space that you procure, bring completed artworks for the salesperson to sell, then set up a space to create. The artists only need to be concerned with creating, the salesperson with selling. One art form helps to inspire another one, so there will be no lack of inspiration and a beautiful energy will be created that will get attention and sales.

9. Do not give up!

You will get noticed and sales will follow, as long as you don't quit! Persistence will pay off. You may not have sales the first hour or first day, but if you continue, you will succeed.

10. Do whatever you can think of to bring attention to your area and to your group of artists.

Make some flyers that can be put in area shops.

Invite newspaper representatives, someone from local radio stations, galleries, gift stores, etc., to come visit.

Create a Press Release to send out. You can find a how to article for writing press releases at Help-2-Succeed by going to http://help-2-succeed.com/blog/index.php/press-release-tips-aamp-generator and you can find press release distribution services by going to http://help-2-succeed.com/blog/index.php/press-release-distribution-services

You can also use social media sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter to get the word out. Just put posts about how you and a group of talented folks are creating, where and when. Other posts can be about the latest pieces that you are working on, the inspiration and so on.

If creative people stop by, invite the artists to join you.

You will see the area around you start to come uphill and even begin to flourish, but you must continue to create and persist with your project. Do whatever you can to attract attention - the more attention, the more success.

After a bit you may discover that your building has been leased or sold. Not a stop for your project. Since you will be helping the new tenant get business - something always necessary - have the agent or owner put in his recommendation that you stay in the space.

Keep this a free project, please pass it around. Doing so will help other artists and other communities to prosper.
