Good Books To Great Motion Pictures For 2009

By Phyllis H Foster

At times a great movie starts as a screenplay and every so often a terrific movie begins as a terrific book. Many of the top movies began in an author's imagination as he authored a story. Here are a few highlights of books to films for the year 2009.

In June 2009, "My Sister's Keeper" was released. Based upon the novel by Jodi Picoult, and starring Cameron Diaz and Jason Patric, this motion picture follows the account of a family with one ill child and another child who is a genetic match to her sister, because she was conceived to keep the first child alive. The book and the motion picture are both really heart-wrenching, however, the altered ending of the film will let down the readers of the book.

August 2009 brings us "The Time Traveler's Wife" based on the best-selling work of fiction by Audrey Niffenegger. Starring Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana, it is a sweeping romance about the life a man who has a genetic malady that causes him to journey through time and his marriage with the woman who has loved him her entire life.

Another film from the summer of 2009 was based upon 2 books, "Julie and Julia: 365 days, 524 recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen" by Julie Powell and "My Life in France" by the great chef Julia Childs and Alex Prud-homme. "Julie and Julia" is a great comedy about the lives of these two women.

What has been billed as the "greatest" rock concert in history happened 40 years ago in August 1969. "Taking Woodstock" directed by Ang Lee is being released in August 2009. It is about a young gay man who unconsciously became a big part of Woodstock. It is based upon the memoir by Elliot Tibor.

One of the funniest and most enjoyable children's stories from latest times will be released as a motion picture in September 2009. "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" stars Anna Faris, Bill Hader, James Caan, Andy Samberg, Tracy Morgan and others. If you have read the story you are sure to be looking forward to the comedic exuberance from this amusing book.

We will see the version of another classic kid's book in October 2009. "Where the Wild Things Are" follows the adventures of Max and his amazing trip to the land of the wild things.

October will bring us "The Road" starring Viggo Mortensen and Charlize Theron. Based upon the famous and Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Cormac McCarthy. It is an larger-than-life saga of a excursion taken by a father and his young son in post apocalyptic times. "The Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold will be released as a motion picture in December 2009. This heart-wrenching story centers on a young girl who has been murdered and is watching over her family unit and the goings-on on Earth from heaven.

And there you have just a couple of of the movies adaptations that are coming out in 2009. If you are the kind who wants to read the book before seeing the movie, now is your chance.
