Proper Keyword Choice to Earn Website Traffic Takes Time and Effort

By William S. Pearson

It can be said that in Search Engine Optimization, simply by those in the field the acronym, SEO, that keywords are everything. Keyword choice is in the search engine field basically everything. You can build the best website, or the best restaurant / car dealership / whatever and if no one finds it you are out of luck and hence out of business. A full use of time and effort for all your website development time and costs as well as your search engine results positioning. Done not at all, or done poorly it would have been better had you stayed in bed and not started your project in the first place.

Not all people think the same or have the same means of communication . This is what makes the world a wonderful place. Different people think and act differently. Their choices in the marketplace are entirely different. Hopefully it will be your product or service that they find on the internet , are drawn to , and either purchase , recommend your product or better yet do both - purchase and give it their stamp of approval to friends and family.

It used to be that all a business person had to do was open their shop and "put in time" - not unlike a government bureaucrat. Times have changed in 2009 / 2010. You had better get on the bandwagon. How do your customers and clientele find and search you out on the internet so that they will be presented and attracted to your website itself , so they will take the next critical steps in the buying process - click onto your site , find the goods or services they want and proceed to checkout.

How can you determine your keywords? First of all by asking , second by tools of the professional Search Engine Optimization and traffic experts trade and lastly when up and running to verify by comparing your choices of keywords versus the actual results and traffic trends as seen in the log of your control panel of your web host. Most internet web hosts provide log and easy to use graphing feature packages free of charge " yet it seems that few take the time and effort to examine their website traffic and visitor logs.

Where to start. Look at the keywords that you would die for. These are referred to in the Search Engine Optimization and Internet traffic building trade as "Primary Key Words". Those are the hardest ones to rank for. Everybody wants these. They are the big money traffic areas. What you want are phrases that are easier to rank for that you can have an impact on search engine serp results. Just ask your customers , friends or family how they would look , locate you or find your service or product on the web, in longer sequence "Long Tail Keyword " Phrases Bingo there you are , almost at the finish line.

You will be able to rank however in what you might consider less lucrative areas. You can have an impact in search areas where there is not as much competition for search engine results. For example more specific or geographic specific combinations of primary keyword terms. Some people refer to these as secondary keywords, others long tail keywords. A standard example given is that you might want the term dog training if you run a dog obedience school. There are millions of other sites, which carry a lot of weight with the search engines for that primary term. However if your escapade was located in Winnipeg Manitoba , most likely you could easily rank on Goggle page 1 with the term Dog training Winnipeg Manitoba. The point is that you can get noticed by the search engine crawlers, and even potential customers, by being on page 1 of that search term. Dog Training alone as a search term or terms may get you page 1015 results, buried back in the pack. Better yet, not only can you rank with these longer and more specific secondary terms, but also your efforts with these longtail keywords, will develop inertia and help to propel you along the path of success with your chosen primary keywords.

Search Engine Optimization " it all starts with keyword choice and choices.
