Start a Cake Decorating Business: Turning Your Creativity into Cash

By Maria Campbell

If you want to start a cake decorating business, you must consider several things in order to make certain that your new business is both a money maker and fun for you.

First of all, you must have a lot of creativity to come up with great ideas for cakes in your mind and then bring those to fruition. Do you think that you have that kind of creativity? Can you create awesome ideas out of thin air for your clients?

Secondly, you need to consider any start up costs you will incur for your new business. To start a cake decorating business, you do not have to have a lot of money. You will need to get good training materials as well as some initial supplies. You can find both training and supplies for a good deal if you know where to look.

Next, you need to consider which niches you may want to service. Are you planning to make wedding cakes? Baby shower cakes? What about kids' birthday cakes?

There are a lot of niches you can service, so it is tempting to jump into all of them at once. Start with one niche, get really good at it and become well known. You will get a lot of referral business.

The type of training that you choose is very important. You may decide that in person classes are best for you. However, many people decide that an online, video training course works best for them. This way, you can repeat the training over and over in the privacy of your own home.

Think about the time investment that will be required when you start a cake decorating business also. You will need to commit your time to both training and making your delicious cakes.

As with any business, cake decorating takes time and effort.
