How to Become A Rainmaker

By Rikki Dee

Rain- seems like that's what we got for most summer! At what point did New York and Seattle trade places and I had no idea?

As rain was the primary subject of discussion for the majority of us Northeasterners the beginning of the Summer, it brings to mind a seminar on Branding I learned from Dr. Benjamin Mack which co-incidentally he entitled How to Be a Rainmaker.

In this and future articles I am going to attempt to cover the key elementsof the lecturewhich included: 1) Making lightning Strike, 2) Keeping the Lightning Striking and 3) Bottling your lightning.

For those of you not aware of Dr. Ben Mack, he is among the leading authorities on Branding today in the USA. He has held positions at over 14 diverse Ad agencies over his memorable career and was a Vice President for Brand strategy for a major corporation.

In essence, what that means was he was in charge of a " billion dollar budget (yes, I said " billion or 500 million smakers)! Don't you think he knows what he is doing? I most certainly do, and not only has he performed magic for the various companies he has worked for, he is also a professional magician who at the age of 19 was the youngest beneficiary of the Award of Merit given by the magic castle.

Do you know what a Rainmaker is? Do you want to become one? A rainmaker aside from the apparent implication of a Medicine Man who using magic makes it rain, is a person with the uncanny ability to be a magnet for clients, exploit (in a good way) political connections, and bottom line, make the business a lot of dough. However, when it rains the lightning isnt far behind! We will get more into that in a bit.

The essential obligation as a marketer is to "up sell" others' understanding of reality. In Benjamin Macks book entitled "Think Two Products Ahead" he gets into the whole concept of how practical branding only occurs when businesses (large or small) think two products ahead instead of the current time frame and for these companies to put together thriving affiliations with their client or customers through their Brand. The piece in the book where Ben Mack discusses the process of developing your Legend Platform is absolutely priceless!

The "Brand" (called YOU) is constructed by using legends or tales that are told over and over and gain strenght with time. These stories should be permitted to say the opposite of what the others say and will increase as the stories get older. So, if you had to make a choice of the type of story you use to make your business sparkle like a diamond (you are reading articles like this to help you right?) why not let them be legends. A Legendary business is a profitable one!

Look out for the next article in the "Rainmaker and Branding" series coming soon to a blog, e-zine or website near you!
