How to Host a Spectacular Outdoor Movie Night on a Tight Budget

By James Rodger

Over the past 5 years there has been an increase in the number of professionally run outdoor cinemas in major cities but what has been really interesting in the last two years is the significant increase of smaller locally run outdoor movie nights. The professionally run cinemas have huge budgets and need big crowds to make a profit every summer but the smaller community run movie nights, which are popping up everywhere, can be put on for an audience as little as 100 people.

With the option to host a movie night for less than $1000 for groups under 200 people, more communities are starting to see that running such an event at their local park is now possible.

Most community groups who have hosted a movie night over the past 2 -3 years have been so impressed with how successful the event went and the funds they were able to raise that they have continued to run the same event year on year with the only difference being the film shown.

There are only a small number of outdoor event companies that specialise in small community run outdoor movie nights but it seems they are not only meeting the needs of the community but they are showing the big companies up.

So what equipment will you require for your outdoor movie night? A huge inflatable screen and AV equipment makes up most of the equipment and all this will be supplied by the outdoor event hire company who will deliver, set up, run the night and pack the equipment away proceeding the event. Leaving very few tasks for you as the event organiser ensuring that your focus is on either the audience or fundraising.

Booking an Outdoor Movie night is also quite simple for even a novice event organiser.

1. Simply select the ideal area you wish to hold the movie night

2. The area picked must be large enough for both equipment and your crowd.

3. Gain permission for the location

4. Look into outdoor events company that specialises in Outdoor Movies and contact them

5. Select a movie

6. Finally, begin publicizing your event

All the technical issues like; the size of the screen, strength of the projector, how loud should the audio system be and all OHS requirements will be sorted out by the outdoor events company you hire.

Finally, the last question people are typically worried about " what if it rains? This is an issue but if you run your event in the dryer months (Sept - May) then the chances of being rained out are much slimmer. Secondly you may also want to choose to have an indoor alternative just incase the flood gates open and threaten to ruin all your great planning. If all else fails the majority of event companies will let you reschedule your event as long as you call off the night by 10am on the event day.
