Plastic Bags: Benefits of Plastic Bags

By Jim Zargot

Plastic or "poly" bags are considered a staple of household storage, used in virtually every home. Even so, some people ponder as to why they should use a plastic bag when so many storage options are available.

Poly bags are valued for their economy of space. Many bags can be stored close together in a solitary drawer or cupboard, permitting for maximum storage potential. Plastic containers tend to take up far more space.

Poly bags are soft to the touch and can be handled with ease. Many come complete with embossed tops to facilitate handling, and are made with double-track closures that make them easy to open and close. They're easy on your other senses as well; sealed plastic bags block out odor, which is why they're used frequently as trash containers.

These bags come in many different sizes, and can store everything from a small pile of toothpicks to large amounts of leftovers.

The quality of transparency is an additional benefit of the plastic bag. While paper bags and plastic containers must be labeled to avoid any degree of 'content confusion,' it's always easy to see what's inside a plastic bag.

In addition, the vast majority of plastic bags are sealable. Unlike their paper counterparts, which gape open without the aid of a rubber band or paper clip, the vast majority of plastic bags are sealed and secured with ease. And, unlike certain other types of bags and sacks, many plastic bags can be resealed after first use.

Economy is another drawing point of the plastic bag. You can buy a huge amount of these bags affordably, and sometimes they can be reused. They're also easy to store; one small box of quart-sized bags, for example, can hold 35 to 40 8-by-8 bags.

Poly bags can be found in most every room of your home. In the course of one day, an average home manager can package leftover spaghetti, yard refuge, paper clips, coupons, and their child's lunches (separately, of course...) in these handy bags.

Plastic bags also lend themselves to the appearance of a tidy, attractive home or home office. They're small, sleek, unobtrusive, and can be stored in drawers and cabinets.

It's when you leave home, however, that plastic bags become nearly irreplaceable. It's widely known that, when you fly on a major airline, you must store most carry on gels and liquids in quart-sized plastic bags.

Poly bags are made of flexible, filmy packaging material and come in many styles. Some can stand up by themselves on a shelf or in a cabinet; others come with handles, or holes that allow for easy hanging of the bag. In addition, some bags are designed to expand, thus permitting additional space for a larger quantity of content.

While many storage tools and containers are available in the modern world, polyethylene bags offer the ultimate blend of convenience, flexibility, economy and attractiveness.

Sometimes when faced with a variety of choices, it's always good to stick with a tried and true classic; one that has it 'all in the bag.
