Not precisely the most difficult subject to satirize, although the script is weak anyway. A somewhat vigorous direction and compact running time help a tad. (91 minutes, 1994)
Raintree County: Clift is a small town Hoosier who makes the blunder of wedding Southern belle Taylor before the start of the Civil War. Intense performing and memorable Johnny Green score help make up for the over-long script. Clift was maimed in near-lethal automobile mishap throughout production, and his work understandably agonizes for it. Cast includes Elizabeth Taylor, Montgomery Clift, Eva Marie Savior, Lee Marvin, and Nigel Patrick. (168 minutes, 1957)
Only Two Pan Play: Well-intentioned filming of the Kingsley Amis novel That Undecided Sensation (adjusted by Bryan Forbes), yearning for fast giggles instead of satire. Peter Vendors is a librarian flirting with a local counleman's wife. Will they take things to far? Cast includes Peter Vendors, Mai Zetterling, Virginia Maskell, Richard Attenborough, and Kenneth Griffith. (106 minutes, 1962)
The House of Yes: On a stormy day in 1983, a youthful gentleman brings his fiancee home to meet his broken Washington, D.C, family, containing his demented twin sis, Jackie-O, whose fantasies in Jacqueline Kennedy have lengthened to the point of reenacting the JFK assassination-with live bullets. Well made black comedy, based on the stage production by Wendy MacLeod. Cast includes Parker Posey, Josh Harnilton, Tori Spelling, Freddie Prinze, Jr., Genevieve Bujold, and Rachael Leigh Cook. Onionhead: A messy film with Griffith joining the Coast Guard in pre WW2 and becoming a ships chef. The film tries to be a comedy, a romance, and a drama at the same time and succeeds at none.
