By Carol F Garcia

It is pretty difficult to suppose that one of the most favorite actors or our time broke into prominence by playing a "sweathog". Even though he had a few roles earlier, one of his most unforgettable roles came in 1975 to 1979 as "Vinnie Barbarino" in "Welcome Back, Kotter". Since that time, he has played in numerous roles. In one of his initial motion picture roles, John Travolta played a young disco dancer named Tony Manero in Saturday Night Fever. This was in 1977, the pinnacle of the disco era. In the story, Tony meets another dancer named Stephanie and they practice together to enter in a dance competition.

Travolta was nominated for an academy award for Best Actor in a leading role, though he did not take home the award, but lost out to Richard Dreyfuss in "The Goodbye Girl".

Not long after that, John Travolta starred in a very famous motion picture that can still be seen on cable reruns. He teamed up with Debra Winger in one of the major films of the time, "Urban Cowboy". He plays the part of Buford "Bud" Uan Davis, who is small-town cowboy who goes to the big city of Houston. While in Houston, he hangs out at Gilley's, a popular bar that is owned by the country singer, Mickey Gilley.

He meets a young cowgirl, "Sissy" portrayed by Debra Winger and the story follows his love affair with Sissy and how he tries to win a competition for riding a mechanical bull. Mechanical bulls were quite popular for some time after that motion picture. This film can often still be seen on cable even now. John Travolta then had a few box office flops and it was in fact many years before he had an additional hit and became popular again.

But in 1994, he caught the eye of the movie-going American public again by starring as Vincent Vega, a mob hitman, in the best-selling movie "Pulp Fiction". Quentin Tarantino directed this movie and it also starred Samuel L. Jackson, Ving Rhames and Uma Thurman. This movie was a gigantic box office success and it also had critical acclaim.

John Travolta was yet again nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor in a leading role for Pulp Fiction, however again he lost out, this time to Tom Hanks for "Forrest Gump".
