Baltimore Water Damage Restoration After A Flood

By Andy Harsh

Baltimore is a great place to live. It is right on the ocean. You can easily get down to the beach, enjoy some water sports, and eat a ton of great seafood. The water also keeps the temperatures moderate all year round. However, this same water can also cause major damage to your home and furnishings if there is too much of it in the wrong place. Being a low-lying area, Baltimore is more susceptible to flooding than most other areas of country. This also means that you have many Baltimore water damage restorations companies from which you can pick if damage does occur in your home. Continue below to learn about water restoration in your house...

The key to comprehensive restoration is to stop the source of the water as fast as possible. The longer the water is coming into your home and the longer that it is sitting on your floor the greater your damage will be, especially to wood. As soon as you notice your home is flooding, you should call in professionals.

However, it's best not to touch any pipes as you could make matters worse. When the professionals arrive, the first thing they will do is stop the flow of the damaging water. Then they will do whatever it takes to remove the water as quickly as possible. This usually involves some kind of a sump pump.

Once the water is gone, the restoration process can begin. As long as the water wasn't in your home for more than twenty four hours, all of your woodwork and plaster should be fine. This includes not only your molding, but also your floorboards. Wet wood warps and can also house hazardous molds and bacteria. Consult with your restoration specialist to see if he thinks the wood needs replacing.

It should just be dried out with fans and a dehumidifier and then treated for mold and fungus growth. If you have inexpensive base boards, you might find it easier to replace them, especially since they have a tendency to warp when wet.

Then they will turn their attention to your carpets. No matter how long or short the carpet padding's exposure to water was, it will have to be replaced. The carpet should be fine if it, again, was underwater for less than twenty four hours. It will just need to be rolled back and dried thoroughly. Then new padding can be put in and the carpet reinstalled. It should be thoroughly cleaned with an anti-bacterial shampoo.

At this point, the major restoration is complete. You'll want to make sure that all your furniture has also been thoroughly dried as well as all your knickknacks. As long as everything has been completely dried out and treated with an anti-bacterial solution, your Baltimore water damage restoration should be over in no time at all.
