Browsing For A Wonderful Film? Check Out These Great Film Summaries

By Janette Bolton

Anytime a Hollywood movie is released the aim is to make a film that the public loves and that will become a chartbuster hit. Take a excellent plot, throw in a couple of celebrated stars along with some special effects and voila', a huge box office success. But it does not always happen that way. Sometimes a movie will include everything that you think might make it a success and it still fails at the box office. There is no such thing as a sure thing in Hollywood.

Lantana - Heartbreaking, adult storyline of relationships obstructed by monotony, routine, and absence of articulation. LaPaglia plays a cop, whose marriage has stagnated, leading him to have an affair. In the mean time, he investigates the disappearance of a lady whose own marriage is in danger. The film is beautifully nuanced at every turn. Cast includes Anthony LaLaglia, Geoffrey Hurry, Barbara Hershey, Kerry Armstrong, Rachael Blake, Vince Colosimo, Daniela Farinacci, and Peter Phelps. (121 minutes, 2001)

Kimberley Jim - Little musical of 2 happy-go-lucky gamblers who win a fortune in a fixed poker game, and then have a change of heart. Cast includes Jim Reeves, Madeleine Guide, Clive Pamell, Arthur Swemmer, and Mike Holt. (82 minutes,'65)

The Last Time I Saw Archie - Webb's single try at comedy is less preposterous than some of his more solemn films; a shame, since William Bowers' script-based on his own Army experiences had indisputable potential, and Mitchum pleasantly underplays as the con guy. By the way, the genuine Archie Chamber sued for invasion of privacy. Cast includes Robert Mitchum, Jack Webb, Martha Hyer, France Nuyen, Louis Nye, Richard Arlen, Don Tangles, Joe Flynn, and Robert Strauss. (98 minutes,'61)

Sexy Beast - A retired British criminal, living the life in Spain, is visited by a fierce gangster who desires him to work one more heist. Trendy, aggressive, current day gangster's film has first-rate acting containing a special performance by Kingsley as the malevolent perpetrator. Cast includes Ray Winstune, Ben Kingsley, Ian McShane, Cavan Kendall, Julianne White, Alvaro Monje, and James Fox. (88 minutes, 2001)

Scandalous - Featherbrained sham in regards to investigative Television journalist who runs afoul of a team of con artists as he tries to extricate himself from a homicide charge. Cast includes Robert Hays, John Giegud, Pamela Stephenson, and Jim Dale. (94 minutes,'84)
