Sump Pump And Its Maintenance

By Scott Rodgers

The home drainage is the most crucial part of any home. Its effective working is something that keeps the house in the perfect condition. And even the small breakdown can bring the daily household activities to a standstill. Rain barrel and sump pumps are those basic parts of the drainage system.

Sump pump is hardly a new concept to anyone. These are usually installed at places to empty the sump pit that is holding the waste water. A pit, a sump pump and a discharge pipe are the parts of the sump pit.

These systems are installed particularly where basement flooding is seen a major problem. The main cause of the problem is low- lying areas. Water overflow in low- lying areas where these pumps are not installed, make the basements vulnerable costing you high damages.

Earlier pumps were connected to the sanitary sewer but now have been restricted by municipal laws. Sump pumps are connected to the home electrical system and are also provided with the battery back- up mechanism. Battery back- up is provided in situations where there is prolonged power cut off. This is because, the constant water pressure may cause the pit to overflow.

You can categorize the sump pump into major two types. In sump pumps either you can have a pedestal pump or the submersible one. The only difference between the two is, the former is mounted over the pit and the latter is fully inserted into the pit.

The only thing they demand in return of efficient working is their proper maintenance. Often people ignore this most necessary thing but their negligence can surely cause a chaos. One should take the burden of cleaning the pump at least twice in a year.

Overtime, dirt, gravel, leaves and other such build ups get accumulated in the pump. This requires timely cleaning of the pump. You can use gloves for this purpose. After that, use a garden hose to fill the pump with water to trigger the pump. If the pump gets triggered, it means you have successfully completed the task of pump cleaning. If not, your pump needs an expert.

Without making any delay, seek advice from plumber. Do not ignore the problem as the result could be some more disastrous.
