The Standard SEO Techniques To Help Boosting Your Web Site Rankings

By Mayra Horn

What is SEO? SEO stands for search engine optimisation, which can make or break your business.

We will assume you don't have a website or domain yet. Your domain name should be easy to remember and short and snappy. Try to avoid putting hyphens in if you can avoid it. You may wish to have a top keyword in the domain but only do this if it fits easily.

Once you have sorted your domain, it is time to setup a website. What sort of site you want is dependent on what the website is for. Blogs are highly favoured by Google at present, and are something to take advantage of. Google likes blogs because of the constant change in fresh content. If you are planning on utilising a CMS, make sure you pick one that is search engine friendly. Some can be done easily such as Drupal, which allows for many SEO customisations to be employed.

Be aware of using meta tags as they certainly don't have the kind of effect on SEO they used to. Do use them, but stick to a small amount of keywords and make sure those keywords appear on the page. The meta description is important to add as Google uses it for its listings.

The internal linking structure in your site should be intuitive and lead to people to exactly where you want them to go. If your primary navigation does not include links to every "key" page you should add some secondary navigation to the page footer. This should also be done if your website has Flash or JavaScript navigation as the spiders cannot index your site if they don't know about all your content. Alternatively there may be content you don't want people to see- use a robots.txt file to solve this:

User-agent: * Disallow: /

This tells spiders not to list certain pages, folders and documents.

These are some of the basic, but important parts of SEO- good luck!
