Feeling Inspired for Indiana Craft Fairs

By Melissa Hartwell

Did you ever get that mood to just make something from nothing? Have you ever felt the very human feeling of trying to piece together your thoughts with the physical, to create a sort of metaphysical object? That is the artist's spirit; a desire inherent (though dormant in most) of humankind.

My muse has been missing for quite some time now. The past few months, my inspiration has dwindled into almost nothingness, and my attempts at making arts and crafts have always turned out beneath my expectations. It was lacking in the spirit and that extra bit of attitude to stand out.

My (young and urban) professional life has taken quite a bit from my crafting skills. As I tried to make enough to get my family and I by, I sorely neglected my artistic passions. I began a search to entice my missing muse back, so I made plans to go visit the noteworthy sites around Indiana. I went to different parks, went on hiking trips and even scheduled a fishing trip with my husband. Everywhere I went, I had a small notebook and pencil handy, so I could doodle and sketch whatever took my fancy at the moment during the day.

Unfortunately, nothing seemed to work. Whatever I tried, I did not seem to get any better at my craft. Yes, I could come up with casual sculptures, but there was always a bit of spark missing from the final product. Finesse was lacking, as well as spirit. Maybe I am doomed to never make another amazing crafted item again.

So then I simply stopped trying. After all, there were more important matters at hand; I needed to focus on my own day job just so I can continue supporting my growing kids. But that's when it suddenly hit me; in not looking for my muse, she suddenly appeared out of nowhere. She was like the proverbial missing car key, showing up just when you begin to give up looking for her.

In just a few minutes, I took up my old sculpting tool which were scattered around the study and immediately began to work on my new masterpiece. Masterpiece, of course, being an exaggeration, but I believe this current one I'm making will now be to my expectations.
