Instructions On Designing And Printing Brochures

By Norman Chow

Brochures play a critical role in the marketing of a business. They function like windows for the consumers, through which they gain knowledge about a company's products, its history, and other details establishing its credentials in the market. Shoddy work on a brochure can do a lot of damage to the reputation of the organization and hence it is very important to take considerable degree of care and attention while developing it. As you read along, you will get some valuable information on various aspects of brochure printing and development.

The main aim of a brochure is to provide information. However, it also has to be visually attractive, so that prospective customers are tempted to read through it. Along with sharp use of colours, an appropriate layout of text and images is also extremely important in brochure design. The basic elements of design such as outlines, fonts, and images should work in complete unison to bring the desired effect. The brochure should not have a clumsy appearance, instead it should be clean and savvy, and at the same time simple and coherent.

While developing the brochure, aspects related to brochure printing should also be carefully considered. It is always recommended to take a sample print to see what the end result will look like before sending the design for large scale brochure printing.

The important aspect of brochure printing budget should not be neglected at the time of brochure designing. Gray scale printing costs lesser than color, thus if you are on a small budget you may want to go for the former. If you are not limited by budget and are planning for colorful brochures, then materials that are thick and have a sheen should be used, as they improve the beauty of colour prints. A concise brochure which requires double sided printing will need an adequately thick paper for printing.

Since brochure printing is done in bulk, always ask for rebates from the printer. Quality, however, must always be of central concern because a compromise on that front might be disastrous for the company's image.

Designing A Website? Don't Forget About SEO

By Mark Walters

Now you might think that simply knocking together a website is easy, a simple thing and an easy way to make money? Wrong.

If you want to write a website that will "Generate Sales" you need to do a few things more than simple website design.

First of all, if you just put a website online it will do nothing. It will not be indexed it, it will not generate sales and it will just sit there like a minimart in a forest.

So, to have your website be indexed by Google, Yahoo and Bing, what do you need to do?

You need to think about what keywords potential customers will type into search engines when looking for the product or service that you are offering. Make your website URL includes these keywords if possible. As an example, if your keyword is 'website design' and you are targeting the Cork area, it would be ideal to have the following web address - http://CorkWebsiteDesign.net.

Make sure you have all titles and header including your keyword's. As an additional measure, your site text in general should include your keywords throughout. Try to use them at the start, middle and end, of each of your site's pages. The point of this is that it makes it easier for search engines to work out what your website is about. The more they know about this, the more favourably they will rank your website in their search results..

Did you notice how that website design incorporates regionalism? Opting to add a location to your website URL and Title reduces the amount of competing websites that must outrank in the search engine result pages. By narrowing your niche you reduce your market, you make sure you target exactly the people you need to.

Having made sure that your on-site SEO is in place, you next need to look at "backlinking". If you over look this aspect of SEO, Google, Yahoo and Bing will almost certainly ignore your website. Your website will be ranked according to how accurately you have performed your SEO and the amount of sites that are linking to yours. You objective is to find ways to get other websites to link yours. The more successful you are in achieving this, the better the ranking of your website will be.

These are just a few of the techniques that can be used, but this is of course more to it than this.

You can always consult with a specialist SEO company if you would like further help with anything else SEO related.

Is Your Developer Wasting Your Money and Time?

By Angus McCain

Web development and maintenance costs can be exorbitant for smaller websites. It is difficult for website owners to pay for the maintenance of highly ranked, Google compliant web pages and still make a decent profit. In many cases, these owners are business focused without the technical know how to understand their developers' recommendations for the best methods of search engine optimization. Because of this, some developers are able to exploit their clients' lack of technical acumen by overcharging for unnecessary services.

For years, since 1998, debates have raged over the self-appointed international standards organization called W3C that attempts to set internet construction standards for the industry. This group of about 356 high-power organizations has attempted to claim that all materials on the internet must meet certain formats and styles to ensure compatibility and uniformity of constructions between sites. When coding is created in W3C standards, the Website is called validated by this self-appointed Internet group.

A recent storm developed against the W3C after it was determined that they were black-balling various computer languages because they deemed them to be inappropriate for use in web site development. There were even untruths about Google actually favoring W3C compatible pages in their search ranking algorithms. In the over 200 pieces of data that Google uses for their ranking engine, not one of them relates to W3C page validation.

Google is not concerned with page validations, or pages being created in strict W3C compliance, and no extra ranking credits are given to the sites that spend up to 20% more time in creation to ensure a strict validation. In other words, the businesses that are paying more money for their W3C validated pages are not receiving any enhanced benefits from this extra layout of cash. User traffic does not increase, and Google does not give a better page ranking for efforts at uniform coding.

Matt Cutts is known in the industry as being one of the leaders at the Google Search Quality group specializing in techniques for search engine optimization. He states that since the Google search bots have to be able to index all web pages and most of those pages are NOT W3C compliant, the search bots do not take into account any web page's W3C compliance when determining search rankings. Ultimately there is no reason to pay extra development dollars for W3C compliance.

Cutting Expenses and Helping the Environment with Used Office Furniture

By John Rickson

Many companies are thinking of ways in order to decrease their expenses due to the state of the economy these days. But the caliber of their productivity and the comfort of their employees are also among the things that they are considering.

Higher expenses are often caused by buying new office materials and fixtures. Because of this, many companies are already trying to purchase used office furniture in order to cut down on their expenses.

A lot of companies don?t want to take a chance on used office furniture because they think that they may break easily. However, not all used office furniture can be broken easily.

There are many of used office fixtures which are very sturdy. Used office furniture can provide comfort to its users. Even though they are used, they can still function the same way they did when they were still new.

One of the best things about used office furniture is that it can cost up to half as less as used furniture. These used office fixtures usually cost about 50 percent of their original value. So, if you are one of those companies who would like to save time, this type of fixture is ideal for you.

By purchasing used office furniture, you will be able to save a lot of your company?s money which at that point can be used for other things. Most of the time, the cost of used office furniture is derived by deducting a certain percentage, which depends on the number of years it has been used, to its value when it was still new.

Additionally, if helping the environment is one of your company?s goals, you can also do this when you purchase used office furniture. As you may well know, having new office furniture means having the need to cut more trees from our forest.

Usually, office fixtures that are old and used are broken into parts; the parts that are in good condition are being mounted on other used office fixtures. With this type of system, the need to cut down more trees to create high quality fixtures is greatly decreased. Used office furniture allows businesses and business owners to take part in saving the planet without compromising the comfort of their employees.

Old and broken office furniture is usually brought to factories where all of their usable parts will be installed as parts of other office fixtures. Therefore, there is less or no more need to cut down more trees for high quality office fixtures. You will be able to take your part in saving the environment without sacrificing your employees? comfort. So why buy new office furniture if you can get used office furniture that can function just as well?

A Small Collection Of Brief Film Reviews To View

By Armando Molina

With a shop near every neighborhood, video stores have been the most convenient way to get movies for years. The next generation it seems will be getting their movies from movie downloads, avoiding any trips to the store. Let's look at what you might find to watch using a movie download site.

The Leading Man: British backstage show romance in regards to an American film megastar who seduces a playwright's desolate spouse and his leading-woman mistress. When it might relatively make up its mind whether it's a joke drama or a light thriller, it's still extremely amusing stuff. Bon Jovi is excellent as the brash, amoral Yankee, and Galiena and Newton are fetching as the females snared in his web. Cast includes Jon Bon Jovi, Anna Galiena, Lambert Wilson, Thandie Newton, Barry Humphries, and David Warner. (100 minutes, 1997)

Trading Places: This movie is testing heredity vs. environment by switching a "have" preppie Aykroyd and a "have-not" road hustler Murphy. Murphy, in his second film, is a powerhouse, and makes up for director Landis' pleasures like a subplot engaging a horny gorilla. Cast includes Dan Aykroyd, Eddie Murphy, Ralph Bellamy, Don Ameche, Denholm Elliott, Kristin Holby, Al Franken, Tom Davis, and Bill Cobbs.(116 minutes, 1983)

Metropolis: A private investigator and his nephew track a suspect to the futuristic Metropolis, meet a bizarre gal who is really an extremely commanding android, and decipher a message sent by a rebel forces leader who plans to take over the city. This is an amazing Japanese animated movie. It is written by Katsuhiro Otomo Akira, based on a visual novel by Osamu Tezuka called Astro Boy. Rich backdrops balance with cartoon looking lead characters, although dramatic storytelling and commanding visuals defeat film's shortcomings. Cast includes Kei Kobayashi, Kohki Okada, Taro Ishida, and Kousei Tomita. (106 minutes, 2001)

Chisum: This film, based on actual events, is about the attempts of good ranchers like Wayne and Knowles to stop the takeover of Lincoln County, New Mexico, by the corrupt Tucker. One of few Wayne Westerns based on historical occurrences. Cast includes John Wayne, Geoffrey Deuel, Forrest Tucker, Christopher George, Ben Johnson, Patric Knowles, Lynda Night, and Richard Jaeckel. (111 minutes, 1970)

A Cry in The Dark: The amazing true tale of Lindy Chamberlain, an Australian female implicated of killing her infant, in spite of her claims that the youngster was taken by a dingo (a wild Australian dog). Author-director Schepisi informs his tale with nearly documentary like actuality, eloquently assaulting the format of trial by story that made Chamberlain and her spouse the most maligned couple in Australia. Streep and Neill are heartbreakingly excellent. Cast includes Meryl Streep, Sam Neill, Bruce Myles, Charles Tingwell, Notch Tate, and Lewis Fitzgerald. (121 minutes, 1988)

Adam's Apples: This movie is a bizarre dark comedy about two very different men who have a battle of wills. It is a newly developed religious zealot versus a hard core neo-Nazi criminal. The battle of good versus evil is on. The main stars are Ulrich Thomsen, Mads Mikkelsen, Nicolas Brom, and Paprika Steen. (German-Danish-comedy directed by Anders Thomas Jensen)

Basic: While things go awry throughout an armed forces work out, base captain Daly brings in Travolta, the best interrogator he ever had, to query the surviving members of the squad, whose tales don't add up. Actually a whodunit, this film keeps us guessing, as a good intrigue should. Cast includes John Travolta, Connie Nielsen, Samuel L. Jackson, Giovanni Ribisi, Tim Daly, Roselyn Sanchez, and Harry Connick. (2003 minutes, 1995)

Infinity: Sugary however choppy film based on the life of Richard Feynman, whose relation with Arline Arquette in pre-WW2. N.Y.C. takes a fateful turn when he is enlisted to work on the Manhattan Project. The scientist won the Nobel Prize in 1965. Cast includes Matthew Broderick, Patricia Arquette, Peter Riegert, Dori Brenner, and James LeGros. (117 minutes, 1996)

The Rock: General Francis Hummel is angry with the U.S. government for not honoring men he has because they died during covert operations. He is so angered by this rebuke that he takes a group of tourists visiting the now closed prison of Alcatraz, and holds them hostage. He plans to unleash poisonous gases upon the city of San Francisco if his demands are not met. The unlikely team of a biological weapons expert, and a former prisoner of Alcatraz, must sneak onto the island and attempt to thwart the plot.

Okay, if you're looking for downloads, try phrases like "Online Kids Movies". Not all searches get the right result. If the first one fails to work out try another one. Try "Online Movie Downloading" next.

Home Stage And Get Your Home Sold Fast

By Sam Stoker

Are you considering putting your house up for sale, but not sure where to start? Afraid it will take too long to sell, or that you will not get the price you want? Think about staging your home, or in other words, setting the scene for immediate buyer interest in your property.

To be really effective, you need to look at both the outside and the inside of your home. Here are 3 tips to get you started with the outside of your home:

1. Drive up to your house to see what prospects see when they drive up to your house. Notice if any paint is peeling or the landscaping looks terrible. Remember, any negative impression they have of the outside of the house is going to make them think the house was not taken care of. Many prospects will drive by your house and look before even calling your agent so make sure they get a good first impression of the outside of your house.

2. Stand on your front porch just outside your front door and look all around. This is a key focal spot that 70 percent of prospects will also stand here and look around. You want to try and see what they will see. Is there animal waste on the yard, dead grass, cobwebs over the front door? These are not good first impressions so make sure you clean them up.

It is definitely worth it to take some time and clean it up. Want to go a step further? Try a new coat of paint or some new furniture or accessories.

3. Do not forget the backyard. While that might not be part of the potential buyers first impression experience, you still should make sure it is in the best condition possible. Pull up weeds, water plants, do some sweeping (if thats applicable in your case) and maybe even purchase new furniture or accessories (plant pots, bird houses, etc.)

Put yourself in a prospects shoes. What first impressions do you get about your house. What do you see that does not look good. Is your house something that you would buy? What would you ask the seller to fix before putting an offer on the house?

I am always surprised at how frugal an owner will be when it comes to staging his house. Remember, every dollar you spend on properly staging your home will return $2 on the sell side. What other investment can you double your money in such a short period of time? Using proper home staging will sell your house at a higher price and in a shorter amount of time.

Let Employees Undergo Leadership Training

By Lynn Lopez

One of the things that employers look for in their employees, apart from the standard abilities like being a team player, being flexible, being detail-oriented, possessing the right skills and qualifications as well as good work ethic, is the drive to learn more and become more. From time to time, you might feel like you're simply a tiny cog in a bigger machine that isn't even aware of your presence or understand the value of what you do, but there is someone who is keeping an eye on what you do and how you perform, and that person is usually your immediate boss. He or she the one who sees your performance and your contributions to the team, and is able to recommend you for a raise or a promotion as needed.

Employers would do well to encourage skills development in their employees. This adds to their arsenal of skills, making them more valuable to the company and ensuring that their skills are used to benefit the company. One of the workshops employers must encourage their workers to take is leadership training.

Some people might think that developing leadership qualities in employees could pose a threat to the current higher-ups, since it sounds as though people will be groomed to usurp their positions. This isn't the case at all. Leadership training simply means that companies will be able to have teams of workers who are all able to take charge and have a thorough understanding of what it takes to make a company run smoothly. Encouraging leadership training in employees also means that employees have a chance for advancement, keeping them on their toes and helping them exercise their potential in their careers.

Leadership training is not something that should be restricted solely to the heads of a company, although it would benefit them in the event that they forget what true leadership is about, help them reassess their progress and figure out where they may be going wrong, and allow them to be more sensitive to the needs of their workers. Everyone who is willing should have a shot at leadership training, especially since it will not only improve their outlook on their jobs and their skills, but also allow them to make use of it in their lives.

Keep in mind that leadership training is not just about creating the future heads of the company and it certainly doesn't mean that participants will be actively angling for currently occupied top positions. It offers people a chance for advancement and self-improvement, and employers should recognize that having a team of highly skilled and effective with leadership abilities is much preferable than having workers who are skilled, but possess a drone-like mentality.

Rio Beats Out Chicago, Two Other Cities To Claim 2016 Summer Olympics

By Ross Everett

South America will host the Summer Olympic Games for the first time in 2016, as Rio De Janeiro, Brazil was awarded the honor on Friday. Rio beat out the US choice of Chicago, Illinois along with Tokyo, Japan and Madrid, Spain to earn the right to host the games. Despite a high pressure effort from the American power elite--ncluding President Barak Obama and TV gabfest queen Oprah Winfrey--Chicago was the first city eliminated from contention. Tokyo was the next to go, before Rio got the nod over Madrid in the final round of balloting.

Bookmakers offered odds on the host city choice, with Rio listed as second favorite at +200. Chicago had been the wagering favorite at most books, particularly after President Obama got involved personally in the US bid effort. Chicago was bet as high as a -300 favorite, while Madrid and Tokyo were priced in the +250 range. Some suggest that Tokyo didnt deserve to have such short odds, but was the beneficiary of regional pride from the notoriously enthusiastic betting population of Japan. Despite some media attention to the betting odds, bookmakers reported that they didn't receive a lot of action on the event.

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil, got the better of his US counterpart Barack Obama The Brazilian leader stressed the unfairness that South America had never hosted the games in his speech to the committee;

"It is a time to address this imbalance. It is time to light the Olympic cauldron in a tropical country."

The Olympic committee was apparently swayed by this presentation and paid no mind to Rios many downsides. It is without a doubt the most dangerous of the finalist cities, where drug cartels and armed bands of thugs roam without impunity. Well do to Rio citizens are used to removing watches and jewelry before they drive anywhere lest they be targeted by carjacking brigands. Rios murder rate is also one of the highest in the world. Brazilian bid officials have stressed that security will be a priority at the games and it better be lest the Olympics turn into a bloodbath.

Some IOC members suggested that the summary dismissal of Chicagos bid was more of a rebuke of the notoriously corrupt USOC. The last two Olympics held in the US were tainted by crime and corruption. The 1996 Atlanta Olympics were disrupted by a terrorist bombing, while the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Games were marred by a well known bribery and corruption scandal.

Web Design For Search Engines

By Alex McMillan Boyle

When you hire a web designer to build you a website, quite often the main focus is spent on aesthetically pleasing graphics and a professional look. However, a professional look is pointless if your website doesn't function well of properly and doesn't attract any traffic.

Your website should be a working tool for your business, it should be a 24/7 sales man, bringing you business so that every time you check your emails you have new leads waiting to be converted into sales.

The purpose of a website will obviously vary depending on what your business is, but either way your site must have a purpose! It could be to gather contact details for contact at a later date, it could be to generate enquiries from potential customers to whom you then reply with a quote, or it could sell your products automatically, but the important thing to ensure is that it has a purpose and is not simply there for the sake of it.

Once you have established your sites purpose you will want to add Calls to Action on each page, so each visitor has an action to take once they have read your content. Content needs to take to format of.. identifying the prospects problem, issue or need explain how you can solve, fix or supply it.. provide an easy system for the prospect to take action.

Once your site is set up in this way and its all set to work like a proper sales funnel, it is then time to try and bring in some traffic. This is where many web designers fail as many dont realise that some functions of a site, like having lots of Flash animations or using a content management system is likely to hinder the sites progress in the search engine rankings.

So to avoid having to completely re-do your website in order to get traffic, the best course of action is to consult an experienced SEO company before you commission the building of your site to a designer.

Three Seo Tips To Make A Difference

By David Anttony

Sometimes it is just the smallest of things that can make a HUGE difference with SEO ranking results.

Here are 3 tiny things that will make a Large difference if you apply them all the time.

1. If you are going fishing make sure there are fish and not too many fishing people.

2. Title is everything.

3. Being bold makes you stand out.

If you are going fishing make sure there are fish and not too many fishing people.

When it comes to a more abstract world like SEO sometimes we forget every-day sense. So let's remember!

In the SEO world making sure there are fish is making sure that there is traffic for a keyword we are selecting to rank for. Use tools like Google Traffic Estimator (just Google it) if you are short on funds, and if you have a little bit of money, go get yourself a WordTracker subscription (they also have a free tool as well which is good). These (and many other traffic tools) will tell you that there are 'fish' for the keywords that you want to rank for.

The next part of the tip is not to fish were everyone else is fishing! This makes logical sense but often forget that it's best to fish were there is little or no competition! So look for keywords that not may people have content written for but a lot of people are looking for.

Page title is everything.

In the SEO world the page title is the 'secret weapon' of the top ranker! Here is 1 thing to remember, make sure that the page title is as close as possible to being 100% the keyword you want to rank for as possible. The page title is like the title of a book. If you wanted to learn about the sex life of a worm then a book title of 'Sex life of a worm' will grab your attention and you will know you have the book you want. On the other hand a title of 'Worms and interesting facts' will not grab you in the same way. The trick is to make your page titles 100% of the keyword you want to rank for. If you add 'clutter' words then you are diluting the most important SEO element - like diluting a single malt whiskey with water or ice.

Being bold makes you stand out.

This is a very good onsite optimization tip if you want to optimize a page/blog entry for a particular keyword, make sure you embolden the keyword in the text 2 or 3 times. Do not overdo it of course!

Characteristics of An Ideal Sleeping Bag

By Bujan Filad

If you are really looking for a sleeping bag that will really serve you well, there is a number of factors you have will have to pay close attention to. Approaching the task of shopping for a sleeping bag with the attitude that 'all sleeping bags are really the same' is not likely to leave you with a product that will serve you very well.

As it turns out, different sleeping bag designs are meant for different purposes, and if you make the mistake of going for the wrong bag for the type of expedition or other use you have in mind, then you would have nobody else to blame when the product turns out to be of absolutely no use to you; or if the product offers you less comfort that you feel that you paid for.

One of the most basic factors that will go into determining what your ideal choice of a sleeping bag should be is the temperature of the campground - or wherever - the bag is to be used. If you go summer camping in a place characterized by very hot summers using a sleeping bag meant for winter camping, then you should not blame anyone if attempting to lull yourself to sleep inside it turns out to be an impossible task!

If when out shopping for a sleeping bag you happen to fancy a particular bag, it is important to read the literature that comes with the bag, and ask the sleeping bag seller which type of temperature conditions the bag is meant for; and then work out whether it would offer suitable accommodation in the place you are considering going camping with it (and keeping in mind the season of the year you will be doing so).

The way through which you would be carrying the sleeping bag is another factor you have to take into consideration when purchasing one. If, for instance, you are looking to go camping in rugged campsites where access by car is impossible (so that you will have to carry your sleeping bag on your back to its final destination), then you need to ensure that you go for a product that is easily portable - like say one of the so called 'mummy bags' which are designed for convenient backpack transportation.

You will also have to think very deeply about the shape of the sleeping bag you opt for. Sleeping bag shapes, as you are bound to learn sooner or later during your shopping expedition, have greater implications beyond aesthetics, since they determine the sleeping bag's heat conservation capacities. For this reason, if you are considering going camping in a summer campsite (where heat conservation might not be a very major factor) going for a rectangular sleeping bag - which offers a lot of sleeping space but is poor at heat conservation might be the ideal situation for you, of course granted there is car transportation right up to the campsite, as the rectangular sleeping bag is rather bulky to carry on the back. In a similar manner, if you are going camping at a site characterized by low temperatures (where heat conservation is a necessity), then you are better off going making a 'mummy bag' your choice of a sleeping bag, because although such a 'mummy bag' does not offer as much sleeping space as the rectangular sleeping bag, it does offer remarkable heat conservation features.

NFL Free Agent Jeff Garcia Slams Oakland Raiders

By Ross Everett

Veteran quarterback Jeff Garcia was released earlier this week by the Philadelphia Eagles, a victim of too many quarterbacks on the roster. Now that hes no longer under contract to a NFL team, hes letting his feelings be known about another one of his recent employers"the Oakland Raiders. There may be no team in the NFL more desperate for a quarterback than the Raiders, but Garcia quickly let it be known that he has no interest in returning to Oakland in an interview in which he slammed the teams management and suggested that current quarterback Jamarcus Russell was in over his head.

Garcia started his comments with an observation that the team is putting too much pressure on their young quarterback:

"I have no problem going into a situation and helping a young guy out and really trying to help the team out overall more so than anything. I just feel like it's an unfortunate situation when the entire work ethic and the entire goal of the team is really put upon one guy's shoulder."

Garcia continued to stress that Russells skill level wasnt the issue:

"When you put him on the field in a one-on-one workout session he'll make every throw for you. But when it comes down to making things happen in the heat of the battle and rallying the troops around you and making a case for the team, that's where maybe things aren't where they need to be."

Russell is currently suffering with a 39.8 pass rating"the worst in the NFL"and hasnt shown much progress from game to game. Garcia went on to assert that the Raiders problems go much deeper than the inexperience of their quarterback:

"It was to a point where I felt like guys who walked through those doors that just were there to collect a check and not really interested in putting everything that they had within themselves on to the football field. And that was the frustrating thing for me to see.

"There were a lot of good young guys in that locker room who really want to do whatever it takes to win, but unfortunately it's not everybody. In order to compete at this level in this game, everybody needs to be on board."

"Maybe it's because how things have been for a number of years now out there and they just don't see the hope"

After Garcias release from the Raiders, coach Tom Cable insinuated that he had an issue with playing backup to Russell:

"There was some talk about how he would fit but the best way for me to approach it is the other two played so well and we are committed to JaMarcus as our starter. Whether or not Garcia was comfortable in a role as a backup, it is what it is."

Ultimately, Garcia got to the point where he simply wanted out:

"To see the reality of the situation and realize what I may be up against staying here for the entire year, it hurt me, it broke my heart to do that to step up. But I just felt like it was something I really didn't want to put myself through anymore."

The 39 year old Garcia has started 110 games in the NFL in ten seasons after a standout career in the Canadian Football League. Theres a good chance youll see him back in action before the end of the year"though the Raiders are clearly not a team that he'd be interested in.

Selecting The Right MCSE Training - Options

By Jason Kendall

Considering an MCSE? If so, it's probable that it's likely you'll come into one of two categories: You could already be in IT and you need to formalise your skill set with an MCSE certification. Or this could be your first step into commercial IT, and research demonstrates that there's a growing demand for men and women who are commercially qualified.

We'd recommend you prove conclusively that the training company you use is actually training you on the latest level of Microsoft development. A lot of students become very demoralised when they find that they've been studying for an outdated version which inevitably will have to be up-dated.

Training colleges should be dedicated to finding the right path for their trainees. Mentoring education is equally about helping people to work out which direction to go in, as well as helping them get there.

Discovering job security nowadays is very unusual. Companies frequently remove us out of the workforce at a moment's notice - as long as it fits their needs.

We could however find security at the market sector level, by searching for areas of high demand, mixed with a shortage of skilled staff.

The computer industry skills shortfall throughout the UK falls in at just over twenty six percent, as shown by the latest e-Skills survey. Put simply, we can't properly place more than three out of each 4 job positions in the computing industry.

This one concept alone shows why the country urgently requires a lot more workers to get trained and get into the Information Technology market.

Actually, acquiring professional IT skills as you progress through the next year or two is likely the best career direction you could choose.

Commencing with the understanding that it makes sense to choose the employment that excites us first, before we can even contemplate what method of training meets that requirement, how can we choose the way that suits us?

How likely is it for us to understand the many facets of a particular career when we haven't done that before? Most likely we have never met anyone who is in that area at all.

Generally, the way to deal with this dilemma appropriately flows from a deep discussion of several areas:

* What hobbies you have and enjoy - as they can point towards what areas you'll get the most enjoyment out of.

* Are you hoping to get qualified because of a precise reason - for example, are you looking at working based at home (maybe self-employment?)?

* Where is the salary on a scale of importance - is it very important, or is job satisfaction a little higher on your list of priorities?

* With many, many ways to train in computing - you will have to gain a basic understanding of what sets them apart.

* Having a serious look at what commitment and time you'll make available.

In all honesty, it's obvious that the only real way to investigate these areas is through a chat with an advisor or professional who has experience of computing (and specifically it's commercial requirements.)

The old fashioned style of teaching, utilising reference manuals and books, is often a huge slog for most of us. If you're nodding as you read this, check out study materials that are multimedia based.

Where we can utilise all of our senses into our learning, then we often see hugely increased memory retention as a result.

Search for a course where you'll get a host of CD or DVD ROM's - you'll start with videos of instructor demonstrations, and then have the opportunity to fine-tune your skills in fully interactive practice sessions.

You must ensure that you see some example materials from the company you're considering. They have to utilise instructor-led video demonstrations with virtual practice-lab's.

You should avoid purely online training. Physical CD or DVD ROM materials are preferable where offered, as you need to be able to use them whenever it's convenient for you - you don't want to be reliant on a quality and continuous internet connection.

There is a tidal wave of change coming via technology over the next few decades - and the industry becomes more ground-breaking every year.

We're only just starting to get an inclination of how technology will define our world. Technology and the web will massively alter the way we see and interact with the entire world over the coming years.

Wages in the IT sector aren't to be ignored moreover - the typical remuneration over this country as a whole for an average IT worker is noticeably better than average salaries nationally. Chances are you'll bring in a whole lot more than you could reasonably hope to get in other industries.

Due to the technological sector emerging year on year, the chances are that the need for certified IT professionals will remain buoyant for quite some time to come.

Your "On-Hold Loop" Holds Music, Messages, and More

By Tim Holdon

To some, it may just be that little box attached to your phone system, but to the more "nuanced", their on-hold player holds music, messages, and a one-of-a-kind tool for communicating with customers. The question is, are you communicating with your customers on-hold?

Here are three things to think about with regard to your on-hold messaging:

1. Don't assume you are automatically "communicating" with your customers on hold, just by having an on-hold system.
2. Ask yourself what you are communicating.
3. Think "dialogue" rather than "monologue" (conceptually, at least).

Too many businesses, I fear, use their on-hold loop as essentially a baby-sitter, that is, more or less the telecom equivalent of their office lobby. I.e., it's a place to dump customers until you can get to them. Among other things, one problem with this approach is it shows or at least implies disrespect for customers - a backwards attitude which seems to say that you are doing them a favor by giving them the privilege of doing business with you. If that is your thinking, may I suggest that you consider the wise words of Hobbes, Calvin's sage companion in the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes, who once remarked, "One of us needs to stick his head in a bucket of ice water."

Your customers are not children, nor are they "profit units". What do your customers hear while in your on-hold loop? Too often, it's something like "Your call is important to us, and will be answered in the order in which it was received" For the record, one call does not an "order" make. Apart from what may be seen by some as grammatical trivialities, the answer to the question of how well you communicate with your customers while they are on hold depends on how we define "communication". Despite living in the "information age", with its steady stream of "new and improved" communications technologies, it seems that, as a society, we are drifting away from true communication. The reasons for this are complex, but I'd like to at least encourage awareness of this trend and, hopefully, inspire some conscious resistance to it among businesses who seek to prosper through really communicating with, connecting with, and serving their customers.

In a required "Principles of Mass Communication" lecture class in college I once stood to my feet and challenged what I felt was the professor's overly simplistic definition of "communication", which was, "the transmission of a message from a sender ("A") to a receiver ("B"). This definition was illustrated by a simple line drawing of two squares labeled "A" and "B", respectively, with an arrow (the "message") in between the two squares, and pointing at "B". While such a spare illustration may serve for purely utilitarian purposes, when it comes to the message itself - and the reason "A" is sending it in the first place - I believe a broader perspective merits consideration. Simply put, if "B" has little or no idea of what "A" is actually trying to say - i.e. "A"s intended message, I, for one, don't think "A" has truly communicated with "B". In such instances the arrow in the middle might just as well be labeled "noise". My professor told me I had a good point to which he would later return. I sat back down at my desk, and waited.

Call it nitpicking, but I would suggest that communication involves more than merely sending a message. True communication, as I see it, does not happen until the intended audience not only receives but also understands the message, at least to some minimal extent. Granted, from a purely technical standpoint, the distinction is merely semantic, and my prof was perfectly correct in his definition. Rather than quibbling over semantics, however, perhaps, with regard to communicating with your customers on hold, the smartest thing would be to talk to them and find out what their experience is in your on-hold loop. They could be a source of constructive feedback and help you communicate more effectively, provide a higher level of service, and, potentially, improve your bottom line. Having an actual conversation with them while they are on hold would obviously be, by definition, unfeasible, but if you have an "out of sight, out of mind" attitude with regard to your on-hold loop, you might not be making the best use of this resource.

Holdtime Studios must be doing something right, as their clients' customers have actually been known to request that they be put back on hold so they can hear the rest of the on-hold message. As for defining "communication" an alternative to my college professor's definition which is also simple, but I think, for current purposes, rather more serviceable, is the word "connection".

By the way, my professor never did return to my point.
